Hello from the Isle of Skye, well we finally reached Edinburgh from Dublin on Wednesday afternoon, picked up the rental car, very nice being Avis preferred customers straight through no paperwork required and a new peugeot 308 diesel to drive.
So headed off towards Fort William through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in the pouring rain!! And I do mean pouring, the Fort William Malliag area had almost 200 mls in 24 hours.
The scenery was incredible despite the rain with mountains and lochs and stone bridges everywhere.
Then arrived in Fort William, the B&B Gowan Brae House was beautiful, Anne and Jim the owners were friendly and really helpful. We settled in and then tried to find somewhere to eat - there were so many people in town it looked as if we might have to eat maccas, but the 4th place we tried said they could give us a table in about half an hour, so we had a drink at the bar while we waited for the table. Food was great so we went back to the B&B wet but happy.
On Thursday we headed to the station and boarded the Jacobite aka the Hogwarts Express, great journey to Malliag in the pouring rain so the scenery was a bit hard to see. We sat with a nice American couple, Dave and Dixy from Illanois who were on their first trip to Scotland. They left the train in Malliag and headed off on the Ferry to Isle of Skye, exchanged email addresses and will keep in touch.
On return to Fort William we went and bought rain jackets as the bloody rain was still pouring down!!!!
Friday we headed to the Isle of Skye, still in the rain!! We are staying at the White Heather Hotel which is really lovely, large room, great bathroom and fantastic view, when the rain and mist breaks.
Today the pouring rain has given way to showers, so we headed out to Dunvegan Castle, which is the ancestoral castle of the clan MacLeod, castle is over 800 years old, really worth a look and the gardens were stunning. Then as the showers had eased up we walked the 2 churches circuit from St Mary's which is a ruined church daring from the 1700's.
Due to the weather we have decided not to go further North to Inverness but are heading back to Edinburgh for a couple of days, we will then head down to the Yorkshire Dales staying in Hawes for a couple of days and then head down to Painswick to stay with Mick and Sue.
Will blog again from Edinburgh.
